Who Makes Granger’s Best Sourdough?

Granger is getting ready to crown its first-ever Best in Sourdough at the Granger Fall Festival on October 17. And celebrity guest judge Brooks Reynolds—the co-founder of the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival, chairman of the Iowa Bacon Board and founder of JR’s SouthPork Ranch at the Iowa State Fairgrounds—will help choose the winner!

Bakers can enter in three categories: Pure Sourdough, Specialty Sourdough and Junior Best in Sourdough for bakers 17 and younger. The entry fee is $10 per loaf.

And sourdough isn’t the only food competition happening. The festival will also hold a homestyle chili cook-off, with the public getting to help choose the winner. Chili tasting and voting runs from noon–2 p.m.; voting spoons are $2.

Both competitions will take place at the WG ELC north parking lot, with winners announced at 2:30 p.m. So, who makes the best sourdough—and the best chili—in Granger? For the first time, we’re about to find out.

• 🏢 Changes Ahead: Prairie Lofts + Twin Eagles’ Second Exit Move Closer

The landscape just west of Granger’s new water tower will noticeably change soon if the Rueter Development moves forward as planned. We’re talking new roads, infrastructure and Prairie Lofts, a planned 42-unit multifamily residential project.

The Prairie Lofts site plan images. Click here to view more.

While this development has been talked about for months (or longer), there are plans in place now to begin public improvements to the area—including construction of the second exit out of Twin Eagles. According to Cole Smith, Granger City Administrator, water, sewer and stormwater work is expected to begin by the end of September, with paving anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026. Side note: under the development agreement with the City, the deadline to have these improvements completed is May 15, 2027.

The Prairie Lofts project is also moving forward. The Granger City Council has given the site plan conditional approval, pending additional buffering along the south side of the property. There was concern that there weren’t enough sizable trees or other landscaping to provide adequate privacy for the homes closest to the new building.

Work on Prairie Lofts is anticipated to begin before the end of the year.
